Zolpidem, the active ingredient in Ambien, stays in your system for varying lengths of time depending on factors like age, liver function, and dosage. On average, zolpidem has a half-life of about 2.5 hours, meaning half the drug is eliminated from the body in that time. However, traces can remain in the system for up to 12–14 hours and may be detectable in urine for 1–3 days. In blood tests, it may show up for up to 20 hours. While its sedative effects wear off within 6–8 hours, it's important not to drive or operate machinery the next morning.
