Every year around November, the planning for New Year starts. The most common questions are - Where to go on December 31st, how to reach to the destination, and how much it goes to cost. Now, let me tell you that in Dubai there are plenty of options from hotel gala dinners to beach clubs to standing near Burj Khalifa with a few hundred thousand other people. But a dhow cruise has quietly become one of the smartest choices for New Year's Eve, and not just for tourists. Lot of residents who have done the Downtown thing once now prefer the water. Here are seven reasons that actually make sense.
1. Its Affordable Compared to Other NYE Options
Lets start with Money first, after all this is what most people check before anything else. A year gala dinner at a hotel that offers a decent view can easily go above AED 1,500 or AED 2,000 per person. Restaurants with a Burj Khalifa view charge similar or more on that one night. A New Year dhow cruise on the other hand usually costs somewhere between AED 300 and AED 1,000 per person depending on whether you choose the Creek or the Marina, and lower deck or upper deck. For that price you are getting dinner, entertainment and the fireworks. For a family of four, the difference is big.
2. Less Crowd, More Breathing Space
Downtown on New Year's Eve is a different level of crowd. People start taking their spots by the afternoon and then you can't really move. On a dhow the number of guests is fixed by the boat's capacity, so you have your own table and your own seat. No standing for five hours, no pushing.
3. A Proper View of the Fireworks
Let me tell you, watching the fireworks from Downtown is not as nice as it looks on Instagram. You spend half the time looking at the back of someone's head or at the screen of the phone in front of you. On a dhow you don't have that issue at all, since its open water all around. The captain on Marina cruises normally takes the boat to a good spot around 11:45, and when the fireworks start over the Palm and the Marina towers, you have a clear view. Creek cruises don't get the same view, so if fireworks are the priority, go with the Marina.
4. Everything Comes in One Ticket
Welcome drink, international buffet, unlimited soft drinks, tea and coffee, a Tanoura show, DJ and the countdown, all included in most New Year Dubai party packages. Some licensed boats offer alcohol packages also, but ask before booking because not every dhow has that. Point is, you are not running between a restaurant, a viewing spot and a party venue. One place, whole night arranged.
5. Much Easier to Reach and Leave
Now this is something people forget until the night itself. Many roads near Downtown close on the evening of the 31st and some metro stations get shut once they are full. Getting home after midnight is a whole another struggle. With a dhow cruise you have a fixed boarding time at the jetty, and many operators offer hotel transfers for an extra charge. Just reach the marina at least an hour early because traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road that evening is heavy.
6. Family Friendly
Kids are allowed on most cruises, usually with a child rate for ages around 4 to 11, and toddlers often go free. Parents and grandparents get a comfortable seat and dinner instead of standing outside for hours. If you are traveling with family, this alone makes the decision easier.
7. The Weather Is Just Right
Now if you have been in Dubai during summer, you know how the heat feels even at midnight. December is the complete opposite. Out on the water its around 18 to 22°C, there is a nice cool breeze coming in, and you can actually enjoy sitting outside without sweating. Having said that, the upper deck does get a bit cold closer to midnight, so better to carry a light jacket.
