What is an impact test apparatus and where is it used?

An impact test apparatus measures how much energy a material absorbs before fracturing under sudden force. It works on the pendulum principle: a weighted pendulum is released from a set angle, strikes a notched specimen, and the energy lost in breaking it is recorded as impact strength.

It is widely used in plastic testing laboratories, quality control departments, and resin and compound manufacturing to check durability and structural integrity. Izod tests strike a vertically clamped specimen, while Charpy tests strike a horizontally placed one.

Presto Stantest's Izod/Charpy Impact Tester offers a capacity of up to 21.68 Joules, four scales, an electromagnetic pendulum release, and a digital display. It complies with ASTM D256 and D6110 and ships with a NABL-approved calibration certificate.
