What ad formats work best in adult advertising?

I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while, and honestly, adult advertising feels very different compared to other niches. You’d think ads that work in regular industries would perform the same here, but that hasn’t really been my experience.

When I first started testing, I went straight for banner ads because they seemed simple and common. But the results were kind of hit or miss. I got impressions, sure, but clicks were inconsistent, and conversions were even worse. It made me wonder if I was just targeting wrong or if the format itself wasn’t strong enough for this space.

Then I tried popunder ads. At first, I wasn’t a fan because they felt a bit aggressive. But surprisingly, they brought in way more traffic. The quality varied though. Some users bounced quickly, while others actually engaged. So it worked, but not perfectly. I had to tweak landing pages a lot to make it worthwhile.

Push notifications were another thing I experimented with. These felt more controlled and less intrusive. The click-through rates were decent, but I noticed they worked better when the creatives were very specific and eye-catching. Generic messages just didn’t perform well at all.

One thing I realized over time is that no single format is “the best.” It really depends on what you’re promoting and who you’re targeting. For example, popunders brought volume, push ads brought slightly better engagement, and banners were okay for retargeting but not for cold traffic.

I also found this guide on adult advertising that breaks things down in a pretty simple way. It helped me understand why some formats behave differently and how to match them with the right kind of offer.

If I had to suggest something based on my own trial and error, I’d say don’t rely on just one format. Test at least two or three side by side. Also, pay attention to your creatives more than anything. In this niche, small changes in images or text can make a big difference.

Still figuring things out myself, but yeah, mixing formats and staying flexible seems to work better than chasing a single “perfect” option.
