What are Book Genres ?

Genres are like flavors in the literary world. They help readers find books to satisfy their quest for reading. The genre could be romance, mystery, fantasy, horror, or anything that draws the reader. They also help market their books to the right audience. Each genre has its own potential gambit of readers.

Genres are not just personal preferences, or choices. They revealed the time and period of when the book was published. For instance, the rise of Gothic fiction in the 18th and 19th centuries was related to darkness, eerie settings and castles. Noteworthy examples include: The Room in the Dragon Volant and In the Glass Darkly Volume 2. The genres we love reveal things about the society in which they were written.

Do you need to write in one genre, or can you intermix with different genres?

There is absolutely nothing wrong in writing for multiple genres and intermixing them. It is called cross genre fiction such as a romantasy, example: A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Silver Flames and A Serpent and the Wings of the Night.
