Paver Base Thickness

Permeable layers can struggle if the base system is not designed properly or if it isn't built to handle the load.

The suggested Paver Base Thickness is kinda all over the place, it can change based on how heavy the traffic is and what the soil is doing underneath. For walkways and pedestrian areas, people usually end up with a compacted aggregate base around 4–6 inches, but for a residential driveway you might be looking at 6–10 inches or even more than that. When it's heavy-duty use, like more frequent vehicles, it often means the base needs to be deeper so the weight spreads out better and drainage is handled in a smarter way. Open-graded aggregate is often chosen too, since it supports water seepage and tends to cut down the chance of puddles forming.

Also, the soil makeup at the site really matters. If the ground drains nicely, you may not need as much prep or as thick of a layer. But if it's clay-rich, or just poorly drained in general, then you usually end up using thicker bases, plus extra drainage steps. Even the installation details count, like adding geotextile fabric and using clean crushed stone, they can boost how everything performs and how long it lasts.
