A magnificent fortress created by Sawan Jai Singh II is the Jaigarh Fort. Huge battlements encircle this nearly intact fort, which is connected to the Amer Fort (also known as "Amber" Fort) by underground tunnels. The Jaigarh Fort, which has similarities with the Amer Fort in terms of architecture and gives a sweeping perspective of the city of Jaipur, was initially constructed to guard the Amer Fort and the palace housed within the complex. The fort has a museum, an armoury, the largest cannon on wheels in the world, a magnificent palace complex, and the "Shubhat Niwas" assembly hall for warriors.

The fort was famed for a vast treasure that was allegedly hidden beneath it in addition to its complex architecture. It is currently believed that when the treasure was discovered in the 1970s, the Rajasthani government confiscated it. To protect Jaipur City and the Amer fort from warlords and competitors, the Jaigarh Fort was constructed.

The Jaigarh Fort's history

The Jaigarh Fort was established in 1726 AD and is located to the north of Jaipur. Maharaja Jai Singh II later renovated the fort and gave it the name Jaigarh Fort.

The Fort was first constructed as a residence for the monarch, but it is now used as a secure location to store wartime weaponry.

Jaipur was a key centre for the manufacture of weaponry during the Middle Ages, and forts were utilised to store the weapons. These weaponry can still be seen in the Fort museum.

Facts Worth Knowing About Jaigarh Fort

During the rule of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, the Jaigarh Fort rose to prominence as one of the richest cannon foundries thanks to the availability of iron ore mines nearby.

After India became a republic, Sawai Bhawani Singh and Major General Man Singh II, the two former emperors of the fort, were also the highest officials in the Indian Army.

In the Jaigarh Fort's Jaivana Cannon: Jaivana was the biggest cannon at the time, but it was never really deployed. Rajput rulers of Amber had cordial, friendly connections with the Mughals. Jaigarh Fort was a Rajput artillery manufacturing facility rather than the residence of the Kings of Jaipur. The cannon only fired once, covering a distance of around 35 kilometres with a charge of 100 kilogrammes (220 lb) of gunpowder.

Architecture

The fort, which spans a wide area measuring 3 kilometres in length and 1 kilometre in width, is constructed with massive walls of red sandstone. The Jaivana Cannon, the largest cannon on wheels in the world, and a sizable palace complex are located in the fort. The Laxmi Vilas, Lalit Mandir, Aram Mandir, and Vilas Mandir are included in this. Along with a museum, an armoury, and a well-kept garden, the fort also has visitors today.
