Indian Server vs US Server Hosting: Speed for Indian Users

Hi everyone,

I've been wondering how much difference server location actually makes to website speed for visitors in India. If most of your audience is based in India, would hosting your website on an Indian server generally provide a faster experience than using a server in the US?

I think it depends on several factors, including server distance, network routing, hosting infrastructure, caching, and the website's overall optimization. An Indian server may offer lower latency for local visitors, but a well-optimized US server can also perform well in some situations.

Rather than choosing based on location alone, I'd like to compare both options using the same website and testing conditions. Tools such as PageSpeed Insights, GTmetrix, and WebPageTest can help evaluate loading performance from relevant locations.

I've also come across Indian hosting providers like YouStable while researching hosting options, but I'd prefer to compare actual performance data before deciding.

A few questions for those who have tested both:

  • Did you notice a significant speed difference between Indian and US servers for Indian visitors?
  • Which metrics do you usually compare, such as TTFB, LCP, or total page load time?
  • Does using a CDN make the server location less important for your website?
I'd love to hear your real-world experiences or see any test results you can share.
