Using a wearable breast pump can be convenient for busy moms, allowing hands-free pumping while you go about your day. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to use a wearable breast pump effectively:
1. Choose the Right Pump
1. Choose the Right Pump
- Make sure your wearable pump fits well and is comfortable. Popular brands include Willow, Elvie, and Freemie. Check that it has the correct flange size for your breasts to avoid discomfort and improve milk flow.
- Before the first use, sterilize all parts that will come in contact with your breast or milk, such as the flange, milk container, and valve. After each use, clean them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Follow the instructions provided with your specific pump to assemble it. This usually involves attaching the flange to the milk container or reservoir, securing the valve, and connecting the motor unit if applicable.
- Ensure you have the correct flange size, as an improper fit can cause discomfort or reduce milk flow. Your nipple should move freely in the tunnel of the flange without too much areola being pulled in.
- Insert the pump into your bra, with the flange centered over your nipple. You might need to adjust your bra or wear a looser one to accommodate the pump.
- Once the pump is in place, turn it on. Many wearable pumps have multiple modes, such as a stimulation mode to encourage letdown and an expression mode for milk extraction.
- Stimulation Mode mimics a baby's quick sucking to help with letdown.
- Expression Mode uses slower, stronger suction to extract milk after a letdown.
- Start with the lowest suction setting to prevent discomfort. Gradually increase the suction to a level that is comfortable and effective for you. Wearable pumps often have app connectivity, which allows you to control the settings from your phone.
- Most sessions last 15-30 minutes. You'll know you're done when the milk flow slows or stops. Wearable pumps allow you to continue with daily tasks, but try to remain relaxed as stress can affect milk flow.
- Once pumping is complete, gently turn off the device and carefully remove the pump from your bra. Be cautious not to spill any milk.
- Transfer the collected milk into a storage container or bottle, following hygienic procedures. Label the milk with the date and time before refrigerating or freezing it.
- Disassemble the pump and clean all parts that come in contact with milk using warm water and soap or in a sterilizer. Make sure they are thoroughly dry before reassembling for the next use.
- If your wearable pump is battery-operated, don’t forget to charge it regularly to ensure it's ready when you need it.
- Relax while pumping: Stress can hinder milk flow, so try to stay calm.
- Stay hydrated: Drink water before and after pumping sessions to maintain your milk supply.
- Massage your breasts: Gently massaging your breasts during pumping can help improve milk flow.
