1. Check Your RV Roof Before Mounting Anything​

Start by inspecting the roof carefully.

Look for:

  • Air-conditioning units
  • Antennas
  • Areas that receive shade
  • Existing cable entry points
You also need to know what is underneath the roof surface before drilling.

This is especially important with conventional rigid panels and brackets. A screw that appears harmless from the outside can become a leak or damage something hidden beneath the roof.

If the roof is already cracked, badly weathered, or showing signs of water intrusion, repair that problem first.

There is little point installing an expensive solar system on a roof that needs attention.

2. Decide Which Mounting Method You Need​

There are two common approaches when considering how to mount solar panels on RV roof.

Drilled Mounting​

Rigid solar panels are often installed using brackets attached to the roof.

This method provides a mechanically secure installation, but it creates roof penetrations. Those penetrations must be properly sealed and maintained.

Adhesive Mounting​

Flexible solar panels can often be attached directly to a suitable RV roof using an appropriate adhesive or high-bond mounting tape, depending on the panel and roof material.

This avoids drilling and keeps the installation low profile.

However, “no drilling” does not mean “no preparation.”

The roof must still be clean, dry, structurally sound, and compatible with the selected adhesive.

For RV owners who want to reduce weight and avoid multiple roof penetrations, flexible solar panels can be particularly attractive.

3. Measure the Available Roof Space​

Before ordering panels, measure the usable area.

Do not measure the entire roof and assume all of it is available.

Subtract the space occupied by:

  • AC units
  • Roof vents
  • Skylights
  • Antennas
  • Satellite equipment
  • Maintenance access areas
Then think about how you will physically walk around the roof during future maintenance.

A 200W or 300W panel might have an attractive power rating, but if its dimensions prevent practical installation, the wattage does not help much.

4. Position the Panels for Better Sun Exposure​

Once you know the usable space, temporarily place the panels where you plan to install them.

Do not attach them yet.

Watch for potential shade.

An RV roof can look completely open until you notice that an air conditioner, vent, antenna, or roof rack casts a shadow across the panel during part of the day.

Even relatively small shaded areas can reduce solar output, depending on the panel design and electrical configuration.

If possible, position the panels where they receive direct sunlight for the longest practical period.

You do not necessarily need the mathematically perfect angle for an RV installation. A well-positioned flat panel with good sun exposure can be much more useful than a perfectly angled panel that is regularly shaded.

5. Prepare the RV Roof​

This step is easy to rush.

Don't.

The surface needs to be clean and dry before adhesive mounting.

Remove:

  • Dust
  • Dirt
  • Grease
  • Wax
  • Old adhesive residue
  • Loose surface material
Use a cleaning product that is compatible with the RV roof membrane.

Different RV roofs can use different materials, including EPDM, TPO, fiberglass, aluminum, and other constructions. A chemical that works well on one surface may damage another.

Always check the RV roof manufacturer's recommendations and the adhesive manufacturer's compatibility information.

6. Mount Flexible Solar Panels​

If you're installing a flexible panel, dry-fit it first.

Make sure the panel sits naturally on the roof without excessive tension, sharp bends, or forced curves.

Flexible does not mean foldable.

Most panels have a specified minimum bend radius. Exceeding it can damage the cells or internal electrical connections.

Once the position is confirmed, apply the approved adhesive or mounting material according to its instructions.

Work carefully from one section toward the other rather than trapping large air pockets underneath the panel.

The goal is a secure, even bond across the intended mounting area.

7. Mount Rigid Solar Panels​

Rigid panels usually require brackets or a mounting system.

Before drilling, mark every mounting location and verify what is underneath the roof.

Once the brackets are installed, use a compatible roof sealant around each penetration.

This is not an area where saving a few minutes makes sense.

A solar panel may last for years. A poorly sealed hole can create a much bigger problem long before the panel reaches the end of its useful life.

For this reason, many RV owners choose professional installation when they are not comfortable identifying the roof structure or sealing penetrations.

8. Plan the Solar Cable Route​

Panel placement and cable routing should be planned together.

You need a practical route from the roof to the charge controller and battery system.

Keep cables away from:

  • Sharp edges
  • Moving components
  • Excessive heat
  • Areas exposed to unnecessary abrasion
  • Standing water
A weatherproof cable-entry gland can provide a cleaner route through the RV roof.

If your RV already has a suitable entry point, using it may reduce the need for another roof penetration.

Keep the cable run as short and practical as possible without creating unsafe routing.

9. Connect the Solar System Correctly​

Mounting the panel is only half the project.

The electrical system typically includes:

Solar panel → charge controller → battery → RV loads

The controller should be compatible with the panel's voltage and current specifications and with the battery chemistry.

If you are installing multiple panels, decide whether they should be connected in series or parallel based on the controller and system design.

Do not simply connect panels together because the wiring looks convenient.

Check the electrical specifications first.

10. Seal and Inspect the Installation​

After installation, inspect every mounting point and cable entry.

For drilled installations, check all roof penetrations.

For adhesive installations, inspect the panel edges and bonded areas.

Look for:

  • Gaps
  • Loose edges
  • Incomplete sealant
  • Exposed cables
  • Areas where water could collect
Then inspect the system again after the first few trips.

RV roofs experience vibration, temperature changes, wind, and movement. A connection that looks perfect on installation day should still be checked periodically.

A few mistakes come up repeatedly.

Installing before measuring.
A panel that fits on paper may interfere with another roof component.

Ignoring shade.
A small shadow can have a surprisingly large impact on production.

Using the wrong adhesive.
Not every adhesive is compatible with every RV roof membrane.

Over-bending flexible panels.
Flexible panels still have mechanical limits.

Skipping cable protection.
Exposed or poorly routed cables can become damaged during travel.

Is a Flexible Solar Panel Better for an RV?​

Rigid panels can be preferable when maximum mechanical strength, traditional mounting hardware, and long-term structural support are priorities.
