Fellowship in Obs & Gynae – Worth Doing After MBBS?

Hi everyone,

I've been thinking seriously about doing a Fellowship in Obstetrics & Gynaecology , and I wanted to get some honest opinions from people who have real experience in this field.

During my clinical practice, I've noticed that women's health cases are very common—whether it's pregnancy-related care, menstrual issues, infections, or fertility concerns. While MBBS gives a basic understanding, handling these cases confidently in real-world situations often feels challenging. That's why I started exploring fellowship options in Obs & Gynae.

From what I've researched, these fellowships usually focus on practical areas like antenatal care, labor management basics, postnatal care, common gynaecological problems, and patient counseling. Some programs also include clinical exposure, which seems really useful because theoretical knowledge alone is not enough in this field.

One of the biggest advantages I see is flexibility. Many of these fellowships are designed for working doctors, offering online learning combined with short-term hospital training. This makes it easier to continue practice while upgrading skills, unlike MD/MS which requires full-time commitment and long preparation.

But I still have a lot of confusion and would really appreciate honest feedback:

  • Does a Fellowship in Obs & Gynae actually help in real clinical practice?
  • Can it improve confidence in handling routine pregnancy and gyne cases independently?
  • Is it useful for doctors planning to open their own clinic?
  • How much value does it add when applying for jobs in hospitals?
  • Is the clinical training provided in these fellowships genuinely helpful?

Another thing I've been thinking about is long-term growth. Women's health is a vast and sensitive area, and patients expect a high level of expertise and trust. So I feel having additional training could make a difference. But at the same time, I'm not sure how much impact a fellowship alone can create compared to a full specialization like MD/MS.

Also, for someone who is not immediately planning for postgraduate entrance exams, can this fellowship act as a good stepping stone? Or is it better to wait and directly focus on PG preparation?

If anyone here has completed a Fellowship in Obs & Gynae or is currently pursuing one, please share your real experience—both positives and negatives. It would really help in making a practical decision.
