Kroger expands generative AI strategy with Google Cloud as the grocery retailer deepens its long-term partnership rolling out Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience (CX) national platform to power intelligent Shopping and Meal assistants that simplify planning, purchases and personalized engagement across digital channels.

The expanded collaboration announced on January 11, 2026 will see Kroger integrate advanced agentic generative AI capabilities into its customer-facing systems, enabling seamless, context-aware experiences based on individual preferences, real-time pricing, availability, offers and Kroger's proprietary data insights.

Scaling AI-Driven Personalization Across the Customer Journey

At the core of this initiative is Kroger's enhanced Shopping assistant and Meal assistant AI-powered tools designed to reduce friction in routine grocery interactions and elevate digital convenience. These assistants use agentic AI to handle complex requests from a single instruction, such as planning as weekly meals, generating grocery lists, reordering past purchases or comparing item details, then instantly translating those plans into actionable shopping carts.

The tools also incorporate an inspiration-to-cart flow, which converts natural language food requests (eg, “vegan tomato soup recipe”) into guided ingredient lists that customers can add to their carts with one click, streamlining the path from idea to order.

Enhancing Customer Engagement and Operational Insights

Beyond proactive shopping support, Kroger will leverage Customer Experience Agent Studio part of the Gemini Enterprise suite to analyze interactions and customer intent, including calls made to stores. This capability helps identify trends and issues earlier, improve associate productivity, and deliver a more consistent, high-touch service experience across Kroger's retail footprint.

According to Kroger's executive leadership, these generative and agentic AI enhancements are intended not only to speed up common tasks for customers but also to preserve core preferences, budgets and lifestyle needs ultimately creating more time for meaningful engagement around food and family.

Retail Innovation and Competitive Advantage

By embedding Google Cloud's next-generation AI technology into its digital ecosystem, Kroger is aiming to set a new standard for personalized retail experiences in the grocery sector. The initiative reflects broader trends in which large retailers are adopting generative AI and agentic solutions to automate complex workflows, deepen personalization, and strengthen customer loyalty through more intuitive, responsive interactions.

This strategy positions Kroger at the forefront of AI-enabled commerce enhancing everyday tasks such as shopping, meal planning and customer support with generative intelligence while preserving the retailer's longstanding mission to deliver value, choice and simplicity to millions of households.
