Living in Dubai has one big advantage that many people don't use properly, and that is how close Oman is. In just a few hours you are in a completely different place with mountains, wadis and quiet beaches. Since the majority of the UAE residents get only two days off, the question they usually ask is how to cover Oman in one weekend without rushing too much.
1. Sort Your Oman Visa First
Before anything else, check your Oman visa. Now if you are a UAE resident, most of the people can get the visa on arrival at the border for 5 OMR (around AED 48) which is valid for 14 days. There is also the eVisa option online, but it takes four to five working days, so apply early if you go for that. Eligibility can depend on your nationality and profession also, so my suggestion is to confirm once with the Royal Oman Police website before the trip. Also keep in mind the UAE exit fee of AED 35.
2. Pick One Area Only
Suppose you try to cover Muscat, Musandam and Salalah in one weekend, then you will spend the whole time in the car. Better to choose one place. Musandam is a big plus point for Dubai people because Khasab is around two and half hours drive, and the dhow cruise in the fjords with dolphins is something you should not miss. Muscat is little far (around four and half to five hours by road) but you get Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, Mutrah Souq and the Corniche all in one city.
3. Decide How You Want to Travel
Driving your own car gives you freedom to stop anywhere, but you need Oman car insurance also. If you don't want to drive, there are buses from Dubai to Muscat, and short flights are also there which does the job when you are short on time.
4. Book Your Stay in Advance
Long weekends and public holidays are very busy because half of UAE goes to Oman at the same time. Hotels in Khasab are limited, so book early. In Muscat you get options for every budget, from simple hotels to beach resorts.
5. Best Time to Go
October to March is the best time because the weather is pleasant for wadis and beaches. Summer is very hot, only Salalah is different as it becomes green during the khareef season from June to September.
