How do you actually get ROI from Explicit ads?

I’ve been wondering this for a while now… are Explicit ads really worth the effort, or is it just trial and error until something clicks?

When I first started experimenting with Explicit ads, I honestly thought it would be easy traffic and quick returns. But it turned out to be way more complicated than I expected. Either I was getting clicks with no conversions, or the traffic quality just didn’t feel right. It made me question if I was targeting the wrong audience or just missing something basic.

One big issue I ran into was creatives. What I thought looked “attention-grabbing” sometimes performed worse than simple, clean visuals. I also noticed that being too aggressive in the ad copy didn’t always help. In fact, softer messaging sometimes brought better engagement. That was surprising to me.

Another thing I learned the hard way is that targeting matters a lot more than I expected. At first, I went too broad, thinking more reach equals more conversions. But it mostly burned my budget. Once I started narrowing down by geo, device, and even time of day, things slowly improved. Still not perfect, but definitely better.

I also played around with landing pages. Sending traffic directly to a generic page didn’t work well. When I matched the ad’s tone with the landing page content, I noticed people stayed longer and interacted more. It felt like consistency was a big deal here.

Something that helped me get a clearer idea was reading through different approaches and setups others were using. I came across this page on Explicit ads that breaks things down in a pretty simple way. It didn’t magically fix everything, but it gave me a better direction to test smarter instead of guessing.

From my experience, I’d say the biggest “best practice” is honestly just testing small and adjusting fast. Don’t go all in on one campaign. Try different creatives, tweak your targeting, and watch what actually works instead of assuming.

I’m still figuring things out, but it feels like Explicit ads can work if you’re patient and pay attention to the details. Curious if anyone else here had similar struggles or found something that consistently works?
