How do you tell the difference between a minor squeak and a major problem?

My car has developed this faint chirping noise when I go over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It is not loud, but now that I have noticed it, I cannot unhear it. The car drives perfectly fine, no vibrations, no warning lights, just this annoying little sound coming from the suspension area. I am usually a "wait and see" kind of person, but I also do not want a simple bushing failure to turn into a costly control arm replacement. I have been reading about knowing when to consult a mechanic versus just living with a noisy car. I also came across an article about the signs you need to visit a car workshop in Al Quoz that mentioned unusual noises as a red flag. Do you guys rush to the shop for every little squeak, or do you have a threshold for when it becomes serious?
